  Work Problems

Work problems have a significant impact on physical and emotional health, so much so that most large businesses provide Employee Assistance Programs. The type of problems experienced in the workplace are multifaceted ranging from workplace bullying and harassment, conflict between employees and managers, workplace accidents, increased stress due to workplace pressure, absenteeism, poor productivity, job dissatisfaction, disagreements with management over work performance.

Consequently employees may experience increased anxiety, sleep difficulties, depression and stress, anger and frustration. Overuse of alcohol and drugs as well as increased smoking is commonplace. Workers also feel run down and fatigued and more susceptible to viral and immune system problems such as the flu.

Workplace injuries and accidents are common often leaving employees with chronic pain conditions such as back and neck pain, headaches and hand and arm injuries.

Impact on family life

As a result of workplace stress and pressure you may find yourself bringing workplace issues into your personal life. This includes directing anger at your spouse and children, isolating yourself from family and friends and working longer hours or feeling irritable and finding it difficult to speak with others you are normally close to.

Workplace Performance and Performance Management

You may be in conflict with your manager over your workplace performance. This being the case ensure that you clarify expectations and set goals that are measurable and realistic. Have regular meetings with your employer and continue to cooperate aiming for a win-win situation. If you feel stressed by the above again clarify expectations, be assertive but never aggressive and ask for advice. Ongoing conflict with management will often lead to stress related complaints and tension and hence needs to be resolved as soon as possible.
